The House Agriculture Committee has released draft language for the long-delayed Farm Bill — and it does NOT include the SAFE Act (HR 1661/S 775).
The SAFE Act would permanently prohibit horse slaughter in the United States and restrict the export of American equines for slaughter abroad.
This legislation will not end the slaughter pipeline overnight, but it is an important step forward. The SAFE Act would reduce the number of American horses sent across our borders and move us closer to ending this practice for good.
The Farm Bill is traditionally renewed only once every five years. That makes this a critical opportunity to advance meaningful protections for our nation’s horses.
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Your calls can make a difference! Call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 and ask to be connected to your Members of Congress. It’s OK to leave them a voice message!
When you speak to your U.S. Senators and Representative, urge them to:
- Cosponsor and support HR 1661/S 775 (the SAFE Act)
- Advocate for inclusion of SAFE Act protections in the Farm Bill
- If they are already supporting the SAFE Act, tell them, Thank You!
As always, thank you for standing with America’s horses.
